The chestnuts are a group of eight or nine species of deciduous trees and shrubs in the beech family Fagaceae.
They are native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
The mild flavor of chestnuts makes them versatile for both sweet and savory dishes. The texture of a chestnut resembles that of potato: a bit crunchy and bitter when raw, cooked chestnuts turn buttery and sweet.
